Our department is one of the only academic plastic surgery departments in the United States. We offer one of the largest groups of academic plastic surgeons in the state. All of our participating physicians hold appointments at the NYU Grossman School.

NYU Langone’s Department of Plastic Surgery provides residents with extensive training in numerous subspecialties of plastic surgery, including cosmetic surgery, breast reconstruction, lip and palate surgery, craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery, extremity reconstruction, facial surgery, and hand surgery. Reconstruction, microsurgery, non-surgical aesthetics and eye plastic surgery.
Each resident performs approximately 800 to 1,000 surgical procedures per year of training. Pierre B. Saada, MD, Residency Program Director, and Vishal D. Thanik, MD, Associate Residency Program Director, our department offers two residency tracks, a six-year integrated track and a three-year independent track.
Comprehensive training in plastic and hand surgery is achieved through rotations at five locations: NYU Langone Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, VA NY Harbor Healthcare System Manhattan Campus, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and William Randolph Hearst. Burn Center at the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Eccles Center. Surgeons at these training centers perform an average of 25 to 30 procedures per day, and the inpatient roll ranges from approximately 50 to 75. All major teaching sites have active resident clinics.

In addition to overnight, operating room and clinical teaching, educational activities include formal lectures; weekly lectures by professors, visiting professors and guest professors; and participation in special courses and symposia organized by members of our department, including the annual Aston Baker Cutting Edge Aesthetics Symposium, the NYU Breast Symposium, and the State of the Art: Facial Reconstruction and Transplantation Conference.
In 2018, our department opened the Cadaver Education Tissue Lab and Seminar Room at the NYU Langone John and Joel Smilo Research Center. This state-of-the-art facility hosts several tissue analysis courses throughout the year to enhance the surgical training curriculum. The laboratory has several analysis stations, each equipped with advanced technology to optimize the learning experience. Behind The Scenes Of The Most Extensive Facial Transplant To Date
Our department encourages all residents to participate in clinical and basic science research. Fully equipped laboratories are available for all areas of composite tissue transplantation, microsurgery, wound healing, craniofacial growth and development, computer imaging and fat grafting.
Our department graduates four residents per year, three from the six-year integrated track and one from the traditional three-year independent track.
The integrated track is open to applicants who have completed graduate training at an institution accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Education (ACGME).
The six-year integrated training program is designed to provide each resident with increasing levels of responsibility and the widest possible experience in all areas of plastic surgery.
Education & Research At Nyu Langone Health
Following an integrated training paradigm, the first 3 years of residency consist of 15 months of basic surgery rotations, 9 months of rotations defined as “highly recommended” by the ACGME Plastic Surgery Residency Review Committee, and 12 months of Plastic and Manual. Surgical rotations
Core surgical rotations include breast and oncology, gastroenterology and nutrition, pediatrics, neurology, cardiology, transplant, minimally invasive and trauma and critical care surgery. Emergency ice is also the original rotation.
In the fourth year, residents rotate for three months at each of the following sites: the plastic surgery service at Teich Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, the plastic surgery service at Bellevue, the hand surgery service at Bellevue, and Memorial Sloan. outside outside Kettering Cancer Center, where he focuses on post-cancer rehabilitation.
During the fifth year, residents spend three months as a chief resident in our department’s ambulatory cosmetic surgery service and three months as a chief resident in the plastic surgery service at the VA NY Harbor Health Care System. They also rotate for six months in the plastic surgery services at Tusk Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion.

The structure of the sixth year is similar to the fourth year. The resident serves three months as a resident in each of the following: Plastic Surgery Service at Tusk Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, Bellevue Plastic Surgery Service, Bellevue Hand Service, and Hansjorg Weiss Plastic Surgery Outpatient Aesthetic Surgery Service.
The independent pathway is available to applicants who have completed basic surgical training as defined by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
The three-year independent training course is almost identical to the fourth, fifth and sixth years of the integrated track, except that one month in the first year is spent at the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Church Burn Center.
Applications for the Integrated Program must be completed through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®) and the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®), also known as Match.

NYU Grossman School of Medicine – Subsidized housing is available for plastic surgery residents. Out-of-town residents are given priority, and wait-listed residents generally receive subsidized housing after the first year. Considering the cost of housing in the area, the NYU Grossman School’s icine compensation is quite generous, and many residents live in off-campus apartments.

In addition to our Director of the Residency Program and Associate Director of the Residency Program, our faculty members include: I couldn’t pass up the great opportunity to come to NYU Langone in 2013. An institution with an incredibly rich surgical history allows me to follow in the footsteps of giants in the field. The energy of NYU Langone, in the heart of New York City, empowers all of us who work in this department to successfully treat any patient in need of reconstructive plastic surgery.
I treat patients with traumatic injuries from boating or motor vehicle accidents, as well as disfigurement from cancer treatment, birth defects such as cleft lip, and bone, jaw or head abnormalities. I also specialize in microsurgery. Using this procedure, for example, I can transfer muscles from one part of the patient’s body to another: to the face to improve the smile, or to the limb to restore function. My favorite part of plastic surgery is that I get to treat patients from head to toe.

Many of the most important advances in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery have been made here at NYU Langone. I have been involved in significant research that has led to significant advances in face transplantation, and I am the director of our face transplant program. Our work has made this procedure safe and feasible for injured veterans, civilians and first responders. I also direct NYU Langone’s Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center.
Since 2005, when the first face transplant was performed in France, we have been studying the long-term effects of face transplant surgery, how patients tolerate medications afterward, and how to reduce the amount of medication they need to prevent organ rejection. .
